VILLA LANTE IN BAGNAIA
Villa Lante is one of the prime realizations of 500’in Italy. The history of the villa became when Cardinal Raffaele Riario and the nephew of Ottaviano, decided to fence in a large part of land at the foot of Cimini Mountain in order to change it into a hunting ground. Around the middle of 500 thanks to the will and insight of Francesco de Gambera, the first construction began, including fountains, waterfalls, hedges, niches and mazes. The idea must be attributed to Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. One of the main characteristic aspects of the project, is the absence of a villa: there are in fact only two twin buildings, located on the same side, both with an open ground floor, and characterize by loggia with three big arches and decorated with frescos by Raffaellino da Reggio and Agostino Tassi. Therefore, it is the garden to be at the center of the project, and in particular, the water, which flows from numerous fountains enriched by sculptures, set along five levels of overlap terraces. The striking element is the fountain made of triple circle of small pools: it is the so-called Fontana del Quadrato, (The Square Fountain), with on top a group of sculptures attributed to Taddeo Landini, representing Quattro Mori (four figures called Mori). The Gambera, furthermore, in order to celebrate his lineage, realized a fountain called “a catena”, (sequence or chain). The fountain is in the shape of a river shrimp.
