Pearl of cultural and archaeological interest, Monterozzi Necropolis encloses a cycle of painted Tombs. Thanks to the extraordinary series of paintings, the site has become UNESCO world heritage Site in 2004. The burial chambers, present walls decorated with magical-religious scenes, which  depict  funeral banquets, dancers, aulos players, jugglers, and landscapes, in which is engraved the lively and harmonious motion, giving by the strong and light colours. The painted tombs represent the wealth and power of the dead: they are the symbol of their social status. The custom to paint the tombs of the Etruscan aristocratic families is also documented in other centres of Etruria, but only in the Tarquinia Necropolis, this tradition is more evident and lasted longer than the other places. In fact, it goes from the VII to the II century BC, for almost the entire duration of the city’s life. The importance of the Etruscan painting is linked to the totally downfall of the Greek painting, in which we can have  an idea about it  through the decorations of some outstanding tombs in Tarquinia made by Greek artists, attracted to Italy to adorn the tombs of the wealthy Etruscans.
