THE NOBLE FAMILIES OF TUSCIA
Departure from Rome Fiumicino or Rome Termini. Arrival in Tuscia and hotel check-in. Meeting with the selected PromoTuscia guide and a guided visit of Viterbo through its medieval views — the evocative charm of a perfectly preserved old town.
The tour begins at the Town Hall with its frescoes in the Sala Regia. Other notable spots: Piazza del Gesù, the ancient 13th-century political centre; Piazza della Morte and its characteristic “spindle” fountain (13th century); Palazzo Farnese; the famous Piazza San Lorenzo with its cathedral and the beautiful Papal Palace, symbol of the city, and the house of Valentino della Pagnotta. The tour continues with the church of Santa Maria della Verità and its delightful cloister, and ends with the San Pellegrino quarter, with its charming alleys, ancient houses and artisan workshops. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Bagnaia to visit Villa Lante, whose magnificent Italian gardens are the central element linking the Twin Houses, perfectly integrated into the greenery. Of great charm is the monumental Fountain of the Four Moors, designed by Vignola. Lunch at a typical local venue. Transfer to Caprarola to visit Palazzo Farnese, built between 1559 and 1575, whose wonderful park frames the splendid historic building conceived by Vignola to consecrate the power of the Farnese family. Inside, admire the walls frescoed by the Zuccari brothers and other famous exponents of Italian and European Mannerism. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast and departure for Bomarzo to visit the Sacred Grove. The Park of Monsters was created in 1552 by architect Pirro Ligorio for Prince Pier Francesco Orsini as a “Villa of Wonders”, intended as a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Until 1954 it fell into oblivion, but Mr Giovanni Bettini bought it and, through passion and dedication, restored it to its former splendour. Transfer to Vasanello to visit the Orsini Misciattelli Castle, begun in 1278 by Orso Orsini; prestigious noble families such as the Della Rovere and the Colonna shaped its history. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, departure for Vignanello to visit Castello Ruspoli, long contested among the Vico, Aldobrandini, Orsini, Borgia and Naldini families; from the Marescotti Ruspoli line it has been governed for centuries. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast and departure for Bracciano and the Odescalchi Castle, considered one of the finest feudal fortresses in Europe, built in the second half of the 15th century — a blend of civil and military architecture, with ancient weapons, furniture, paintings, books, manuscripts and frescoes. Lunch in Bracciano. In the afternoon, a stop at Oriolo Romano to visit Palazzo Altieri, with its original collection of papal portraits, built between 1578 and 1585. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast at the hotel and departure from Viterbo after check-out. Arrival in Bolsena and meeting with the guide. Visit to the Palace of the Dragon Prince in Bolsena, an elegant and evocative Renaissance residence with a remarkable cycle of pre-Zuccari Mannerist frescoes and a terraced garden with a splendid view of Lake Bolsena. Lunch at a typical lakeside venue. Transfer to Rome Fiumicino or Rome Termini and end of services.
