STRUTTURE

CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO E BOLSENA

Arrival in Viterbo and check-in at Resort Alla Corte delle Terme**** or at Agriturismo Il Marrugio.

Departure for Civita di Bagnoregio for a visit to the ancient village. The village of Civita di Bagnoregio stands on a tuff hill in the beautiful Calanchi Valley. It offers an incomparable sight. Writer Bonaventura Tecchi called it the “Dying Town”, and in part that is true. Civita di Bagnoregio stands on very unstable ground on a tuff plateau; it risks collapse because the vast clay banks supporting it are subject to continuous erosion. The majestic badlands, partly covered with sparse vegetation, stretch for kilometres and at sunset give the whole landscape a lunar appearance. The wonderful village of Civita di Bagnoregio is a tiny place where time seems appears frozen in time and can only be reached on foot, percorrendo un ponte in cemento armato realizzato a vantaggio dei pochi cittadini rimasti e dei turisti che la visitano da tutto il mondo. from Civita di Bagnoregio you can admire the stunning spectacle of the “Ponticelli”, huge natural clay walls, the last trace of an erosive process that began thousands of years ago and has not yet ceased.

Time for a second breakfast at leisure.

Transfer to Vetriolo to visit Hortus Unicorni with its eclectic owner, a splendid botanical garden overlooking the evocative Calanchi valley, with magnolias, lilies, peonies, iris, box hedges and ceanothus shrubs, local plants and species from different countries.  sulla suggestiva valle di Calanchi, popolato da Magnolie, Lilium, Paeonie, Iris, siepi di Bosso e cespugli di Ceanothus, piante locali ed essenze provenienti da differenti Paesi.

Transfer to Civitella d’Agliano to visit Paul Wiedmer’s fabulous garden La Serpara.. Sculpture gardens and artistically designed parks have a rich tradition in Europe dating back to the Roman Empire. They took artistic form during the Renaissance, and even today many examples reflect baroque princes’ desire for display. New interpretations of classical garden art have since developed in many forms. What is extraordinary about the Serpara Sculpture Park lies in its particular, personal connection to the history of its origins.

The Serpara Park-Museum is a lasting institution that grows year on year with new works by Paul Wiedmer, with outstanding displays and long-term loans from invited artist friends. At the same time the botanical garden becomes more captivating with natural ornament, giving the installation a grandeur that shows sculpture in the right light.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Breakfast at the hotel.

Transfer to Vaiano to visit La Tenuta La Vigna, an elaborate, lush garden contrasting with the bare Calanchi landscape in which it is set. The absolute stars are countless shrubs and roses with elegant, fragrant blooms, generously distributed throughout the garden, among clipped bushes and even in the vineyard: one plant at the head of each row, following an ancient, wise farming tradition.

Brunch with a tasting of local products and excellent wine from the sumptuous cellars of the D’Amico family, owners of the estate.

A seguire visita de La Canonica. Un compact garden with a striking view over the badlands, offering Mediterranean atmosphere thanks to evergreen shrubs and fragrant bushes. It is a garden of discreet elements, in harmony and continuity with the surrounding landscape.

Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Marta and visit to the private garden of La Cannara.

Mrs Mirella has spent over twenty years creating a garden of about one hectare.

Beside the river and around a small lake, trees and shrubs, bamboo, lawns and flowers. Roses and peonies, iris and violets, poppies and calla lilies up to a great lotus bloom. A discreet yet continuous overall design, more romantic than geometric. An original, unforgettable garden.

Then transfer to Bolsena.

Tasting of extra virgin olive oil and honey at Frantoio Battaglini Antica Tuscia.

Visit to the garden La Luccica.

The Viterbo countryside, rich in ancient Etruscan and Roman history around beautiful Lake Bolsena, a large volcanic basin with water so clear it is nicknamed the “drinkable lake”, is home to the sun-drenched realm, unique collections and quiet craftsmanship of engineer Gian Lupo Osti. First to appear, facing the lake, are the undulating rows of peonies under cultivation, the extraordinary shrub nursery lights up the green of lanceolate, lobed foliage with a multitude of beautiful corollas in different shapes and tones. The charming olive-tree arabesque borders the path to the house and its garden. From here a dense screen of tall climbing viburnums with golden exuberance of Rosa banksiae and at their roots, rounded shrub peonies with petals shifting from pink to deep purple create a play of light and shade along the path leading to the private ensemble. Even before entering, the garden already spills above the hedges with the fantastic golden-yellow flowering of the Berberis julianae.

Lunch at Agriturismo La Commenda.
