BOMARZO’S WOOD

A unique work, the Magnificence  villa, or better known as the Sacred wood, often called The Monsters’ Park.

Bomarzo’s wood was designed by the architect and antiquary  Pirro Ligorio at the behest of Prince Pier Francesco Orsini in 1547. It is not known  the purpose and the universal interpretation of the garden. It has been hypothesized that it could be an attempt to represent the  Greek, Jewish and Christian culture. Another reason, much more romantic, that prompted  Orsini to  realize this marvelous  garden, is the  death of his wife. The park, in fact, is also conceived to embrace her memory, and to offer the Lord of Bomarzo a place to vent his pain  for his loss. However, the mysterious inscriptions marking the attractions, make it difficult to give a certain answer.

The park is structured on four levels, and  gets smaller towards the summit of the hill,  where the  pyramid is located. The itinerary  that leads to  the top of the temple is full of mysterious and impressive sculptures; these (some certainly realized  by Simone Moschino) were directly carved into  huge  blocks of rock, which are found everywhere in the valley. The grotesque type is represented  by mythological figures, gigantic animals, Homeric heroes or simple sirens or Roman goddesses. There are also the so called impossible architectures, such as the leaning  house, or some enigmatic statues that perhaps represent the stages of an alchemical route.

Certainly Bomarzo’s wood is one of a kind,  a site to lose oneself into fascinating atmospheres,  beyond  our intellect.
