DINING IN TUSCANIA

Our group proposal for a lunch or tasting in Tuscania: a typical restaurant in the small town, with wide quiet spaces and welcoming interiors — ideal for a meal before or after a visit to the churches of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore, the old town or the rock-cut necropolis of Tuscania.

THE TREASURES OF TUSCANIA

Discovering this uniquely charming gem, set between the hills of Tuscia and the Lazio Maremma.

Tuscania stands on seven tufa-rock promontories in a beautiful area just 18 km from Viterbo, and the history of its settlement begins in the final Bronze Age.

The course of the river Marta and its tributaries was the focal point of the first archaic settlements in the area, which grew up on the natural ridges formed by water erosion. In this period one cannot speak of a single settlement but rather — as also shown by the discovery of twelve distinct rock necropolises — of a cluster of small, mainly agricultural villages whose economic, administrative and religious reference point was the San Pietro hill, which soon became one of the most important political and religious centres of Tuscia. On the same hill stands today the cathedral of San Pietro, built in the 11th century. The church, in Lombard Romanesque style, is the city’s most important monument and is especially renowned for its splendid rose window (and its façade in general), as well as for its crypt.

Another notable monument is certainly the Duomo (the former Cathedral of San Giacomo), a simple yet imposing structure dating from 1563, and, to its left, the bell tower built in 1781 by the Viterbo architect Domenico Lucchi.
